Helping Firefighters and Paramedics heal from PTSD - one loyal Guardian K9 at a time

Mission & Origin

The Guardian K9 Foundation was established to address a critical and underserved need in the first-responder community. Firefighters and paramedics routinely encounter repeated, high-intensity trauma that leads to significantly elevated rates of PTSD, anxiety, depression, and suicide — often exceeding line-of-duty deaths.

While many organizations provide service dogs to military veterans and other groups, few focus exclusively on the unique challenges faced by firefighters and paramedics. Recognizing this gap, the Foundation was created to train and deliver high-quality PTSD service dogs at no cost to qualifying first responders nationwide.

Our approach is grounded in advanced canine behavioral science, relationship-based training methods, and rigorous veterinary oversight. These specially prepared dogs are proven to reduce hypervigilance, interrupt panic attacks, provide deep pressure therapy during flashbacks, disrupt night terrors, and restore emotional stability and sleep quality — offering powerful, non-stigmatizing support that complements traditional mental health care.

PTSD rates among firefighters and paramedics reach 30% or higher, and more die by suicide than in the line of duty. Every professionally trained Guardian K9 costs $25,000–$40,000. We exist to remove that barrier.

Guided by a team of experienced Firefighter leadership, cynologists, professional trainers, and veterinary specialists, we are committed to ethical, science-informed training and the highest standards of animal welfare. Our goal is to scale this life-saving work through the development of a dedicated training facility in Washington state, enabling us to serve more first responders with compassion and excellence.
